"I am serving as the Transfer Director for the MRRC this year! I am the biracial daughter of immigrants, and am half Vietnamese and half Belarusian-Jewish. A San Diego native, I’ve spent some time working in the public school system and exploring curriculum design for humanities fields. I want to work in Higher Education in the future, and am excited to advocate for the transfer community I call home. In my free time I enjoy hiking, weightlifting, exploring new bookstores and spending quality time with friends. One thing I love about MRRC is its focus on community and connection. Change and challenge can be daunting, but it’s much easier to navigate when you are supported by a community that sees and values you like the MRRC!"

I got involved with MRRC after discovering a welcoming community through my Senior Weekend experience. Having a space to share my experiences as a mixed Black and Filipina student at Cal has been such a meaningful part of my college journey — I wanted to ensure this space continues to be accessible, accepting, and thriving, which is why I took on the Retention Director role! Outside of Mixed, I love all things music & entertainment, food, cats, and traveling. I’m so excited to continue building a fun and loving community at Mixed and can’t wait to see you all at our events this year :)"

With my diverse background – a blend of Puerto Rican and Polish heritage – I've come to understand the richness that comes from embracing various cultures. Through my journey, I've learned that authenticity is a superpower, and I encourage everyone to express themselves fully. My personal motto revolves around pushing boundaries and exploring the endless possibilities that life offers. Embracing diversity, I believe that being genuine is key. K-12 Recruitment DirectorJose Hernandez
"Hi! My name is Jose Hernandez and I’m one of the K-12 Directors this year. I am a rising second-year majoring in Legal Studies and possibly minoring in Ethnic Studies or Film. I had the opportunity to attend Senior Weekend with MIXED and had the most impactful weekend. Already knowing I was committing to CAL, MIXED gave me reassurance about the different cultures and communities this org exposes you to. At first, I was a fellow for the Retention department my first year but was inspired to give back to my community by the work K-12 directors did for Senior Weekend which brought me to apply to K-12. The thing about MIXED and bridges as a whole, the community is very welcoming, calm, and empowering to the point where we all are friends (4 LIFERS). On my own time, I LOVEEEEEE making playlists every month showcasing my vibes, love going out, exploring cafes, and taking long drives up to SF (can’t drive tho LOL). SO EXCITED for this semester! Can’t wait for the events and opportunities our department will bring (JOIN K-12!!)."

Hey y’all, my name is James! I’m a the Transfer director for MRRC and I’m a fourth year. I major in Philosophy and I’m from the Bay so you already know I’m for food and views! I’m mixed with Black and Filipino. What gained my interest to join MRRC this year was from what I learned in community college. I was a part of a Philipinx space that had helped me learn false expectations we have for our identity. And this was something I wanted to carry this on to Berkeley and at MRRC about mixedness and mixed identity.

Operations DirectorChristian Kazianka
"Hello friends! My name is Christian Kazianka and I am this year's Operations Director. I am a second-year undergraduate and I am currently planning on double majoring in Political Science and Psychology. I was introduced to MRRC when I attended Senior Weekend in the spring before my freshman year and subsequently became a K-12 Recruitment Intern and Community Development Intern, which is where I really got to know the staff and mixed community members on campus and the importance of the work that we do. MRRC has been one of the few places here that have offered me a space to be my true self, and I am honored to have been given the opportunity to offer this same sort of feeling to other students. I am almost always working (you’ll probably see me driving a little blue golf cart around campus lol), but if I do have free time then I like to spend it laying in bed watching Netflix, eating burritos or drinking smoothies, taking strolls around campus and Downtown Berkeley, or spending time with friends."

Transfer Recruitment DirectorWafaa Elshawarbi
"Greetings friends! As MRRC’s Transfer Recruitment Director, I help students find their way to 4-year institutions, and if they’re interested in attending UC Berkeley, I make sure they get everything they’d need to attend, as well as let them know of opportunities (including MRRC Fellowships).
I am a first-generation spring-admit junior-transfer from Ohlone College, and I’m currently majoring in Legal Studies; with an interest in Criminal Law. I’m hoping to help people of color that have been wronged by the system, especially juveniles who have been treated unfairly because of how they look, where they’re from, and the color of their skin. My current hobbies include making music, staying up until 3 am for no reason, and watching Grey’s Anatomy for the 4th time on Netflix." |
